Segovia is a city in the very centre of Spain, very close to Madrid (just 20 minutes away by high speed train). Therefore, it is a perfect combination between the proximity of a big city and the quiet tranquillity of a small city as it is, with a population of 56.000 inhabitants.
Segovia is a UNESCO World Heritage city since 1985. It symbol is the aqueduct led by Romans in the 1st century to transport water from the mountains to the village. But being this engineering work it image, Segovia is very rich on historical architecture, having the roman style as its main exponent.
Anyway, the landscape of this city that belongs to Castile and Leon, the region for knights, is composed not only by its historical architecture but also by its surroundings. The Guadarrama mountain range, the labour fields and the two rivers that surround the city, Eresma and Clamores, coexist in perfect harmony with the buildings.
The river Eresma, through the centuries, has been the origin of an industry that is today an exponent of industrial heritage of great value. The Mint of Segovia is the oldest industrial building of Europe. It is being refurbish, and will house a museum devoted to the spreading of the importance of the activity of coining for Segovia and of the building.
Along the sides of this river, a network a mills is being recovered for the same purpose: showing their importance to the Segovians.
We could say the same of the vegetable gardens that still today are in use and are a part of the landscape of the suburbs of the city.
