Pittsburgh

Few cities have the visual drama of Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania, USA) or so rich the national memories.  At the Pittsburgh Point the Allegheny River and the Monongahela River converge and form the Ohio River, which flows west to join the Mississippi.  It is Pittsburgh’s situation at the convergence of these three rivers that made it a popular site for steel and commerce industries.  Today, Pittsburgh is a center of banking, medicine, and education.  When the era of “Big Steel” ended in the 1970s, the diversity of Pittsburgh industry was essential to the future. Recently, Pittsburgh has been ranked the United States’ Most Livable City; an example of how Pittsburgh's way of thinking about its rivers, riverfronts and environment has changed since the "Smoky City" days of our Steel Heritage.
