The Project - Illuminated River

The project incorporates up to 15 London's bridges and once complete it is going to be the longest public art commission in the world spanning at 2.5 miles in length. Its aim is to connect, celebrate and capture the spirit of the River Thames and its diverse communities and to enhance city's less well used spaces.
The first phase of the project is due to launch in 2019, so watch the space and the mighty Thames River!
Leo Villareal, American artist and London architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands are leading on the vision, design and creation of the project.
The artwork on each bridge is to capture its unique history, identity, and to respond to its distinct area/communities of the Thames.
“This river project aims to be an exemplary of best practice and cooperation for culture in the urban dimension, demonstrating how multiple private and public organisations and bodies can work together to improve public space for everyone“ (via crossriverpartnership.org)
“The Illuminated River will give London free art. The project also means that a wasted asset and wasted resource will now be used. The team had thought through how the project is sustainable, how it will be energy efficient and use less energy.” - Mayor of London Sadiq Khan
The Illuminated River Foundation is holding talk on 29 November with artist Leo Villareal on his concept behind the Illuminated River. You can sign up here.
