On 12th February the Ostend Library gathered more than 20 librarians from all over Flanders / Belgium for the first dissemination event of the change making methodology prepared during the course of our I_Improve Erasmus+ European collaboration. The task was to disseminate findings from the process, which was created and implemented during our I_Improve project. Iwona Preis from Intercult was invited as lead partner and foreign participant to take part in the dissemination event.
Ostend Library changemaking tool is a project about including people with dementia in the activities of the library. A new, and not obvious, target group where the library can use their archives of vinyl and music to temporarily bring back memories. Bart Simoens (© photo ), son of an elderly couple living at a care home, learned more about the patterns of dementia and experienced the emotional reaction in the brain of his mother and father when the three of them play accordion and sing together. They do this every time they meet; they can’t speak to each other as dementia has clouded Bart’s parents’ minds – but they play music together and it connects them. He never thought what happend was possible. Here is a photo where they all look into the lens. Bart’s mom has just discovered her own image on the screen, and her face lights up!
