The Waterfront Event, 29 June 2018, between Ostend and Zeebrugge, Belgium.
This year the Province of West Flanders launches the final edition of the cultural commemoration programme “Gone West” with the big participative project: The Waterfront which takes place on 29 June 2018 between Ostend and Zeebrugge. The Waterfront event aims to commemorate the First World War victims who lost their lives in the spring of 1918 around both ports.
During the event 6,000 participants will get a package for 2 persons that they can transform into a boat and write a message of peace on the sail. Each boat will be named after someone who died at sea during the First World War. Then the boats will be launched in a 21 km long chain between Ostend and Zeebrugge. After the event, the participants can take the boat home, where it can be used as a seat cushion or a toy boat.
The boat was designed and developed by a group of students of Industrial Product Design of Howest (Hogeschool West-Vlaanderen) supported by experts from Sioen Industries group.
