People and Culture Convention, 6-9 February 2018, Eskilstuna, Sweden.

The first People and Culture Convention took place in the city of Eskilstuna. It featured 260 cross-sectorial program points, 1500 visitors and good coverage in the mass media. Discussions were held about the role of culture in the political debate, and both party leaders and cultural policy makers were present and met with the representatives of the sector. The organizers of the congress were Associations of Regional Museums, Regional Theatres and Regional Music.
Iwona Preis, President of River//Cities and CEO of Intercult participated in a seminar on the #FutureOfCultureinEurope asking the audience how we can influence European culture policies from Eskilstuna? Cultural organizations all over Europe are engaged in a discussion on the role of culture in the future Europe and on its potential to strengthen the European project. Culture has played and will play an important role in defining the future of the EU.
During the seminar there was a discussion on the possibilities for Swedish cultural organization to take part in creating new European policies. How can the Swedish culture sector take part in shaping the future of Europe? What is the role of culture in this future scenario and what policy changes are necessary for culture to be an important link in society? As a background for the discussions Iwona used Culture Action Europe´s Paper entitled "Belonging and Becoming: A cultural response to the White Paper on the Future of Europe and the accompanying reflection papers" which proposes a first answer to this question, reflecting the voices of over 500 cultural players throughout Europe.
