Future Dust, Totally Thames Festival, 1-30 September 2017
According to the World Economic Forum there will be more plastic than fish in the sea in weight by 2050. Therefore, plastic pollution has become one of the most serious global environmental challenges affecting the Thames, waterways and oceans.
In the Totally Thames Festival this issue is reflected upon by the Artist Maria Arceo. Her large-scale artwork Future Dust is responding to the sheer scale of plastic litter that is being deposited into the Thames. The installation has toured to different riverside locations across London and has been illuminated at dusk by Dutch interactive light artist Tim Scheffer.
For the last year, Arceo has been collecting plastic from over forty beaches along the tidal Thames down to the Estuary. The piece invites the viewer to question their perception of the environmental impact of plastic, whilst challenging Londoners towards a more sustainable future.
